When you sweep the tip of the rod through the joint it should melt in. You will need to track down a specialized solder or brazing alloy intended for use on aluminum or for joining aluminum to a different metal depending on your project. Aluminum brazing fluxes consist of various combinations of fluorides and chlorides and are supplied as a dry powder. You want the metal to melt the rod not the flame.
